This trending ingredient isn't going anywhere. We chatted with pros well-versed in CBD for insight into its future in the spa and wellness industries, and what it can do for your treatments and self-care routines.
1. What are the major uses of CBD in the spa/wellness setting?
-Erin Todd, director of sales and marketing, Wiregrass Wellness: While CBD-infused massage oils and essential oils have become commonplace in the spa and wellness industry, we like to see a more innovative approach. We incorporate CBD into our skin care products to provide additional benefits at the end of facial treatments. We find that CBD-infused serums and moisturizers, combined with powerful ingredients like retinol, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and apple stem cells, offer a comprehensive solution for skin health and wellness. This unique blend of ingredients works synergistically to reduce inflammation, promote cell turnover, hydrate the skin and protect against environmental damage.
-Joan Sutton, founder, 707 Flora: CBD is a versatile ingredient and formulated in products that can be highly effective in both facial and body therapies. Higher doses of CBD in oils and balms are great for relieving body muscle soreness and tension, while CBD skin treatments can help address facial inflammation, and help soothe and balance the skin on a cellular level.
-Sarah Mirsini, founder, MĀSK Skincare: Facials and skin care treatments for sure; CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it ideal for facials aimed at soothing redness, acne, eczema or sensitive skin conditions. It also has anti-aging benefits, as the antioxidants in CBD help combat free radical damage, making it beneficial in anti-aging treatments to reduce fine lines and improve skin elasticity. Many CBD serums and moisturizers hydrate and brighten the skin, often combined with other nourishing ingredients for a radiant, healthy glow.
2. Are there any emerging trends you are seeing within CBD?
-Todd: While CBD has long been associated with relaxation and stress relief, its potential benefits are expanding beyond traditional wellness practices. Recent studies have shown that CBD can also be effective in addressing skin concerns, particularly inflammation and redness. Some research has indicated CBD helps with sebum regulation, which is beneficial for both oily and acne prone skin.
When you have CBD-infused skin care products combined with other powerful ingredients like retinol, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C, the combo of ingredients works together in synergy to provide amazing benefits for all skin types. By incorporating CBD into skin care routines, we can harness its potential to promote healthier, more radiant skin.
-Sutton: The natural next step are products that combine CBD with other adaptogens like functional mushrooms, ashwagandha, ginseng and other power house ingredients to maximize the anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects on the skin and the body.
-Mirsini: CBD retinol and vitamin C blends is one trend. Combining CBD with popular skin care ingredients like retinol and vitamin C addresses skin aging and inflammation, targeting concerns like acne, pigmentation and fine lines. Also, we are seeing "smart CBD skin care:" Sensor-activated CBD, triggered by skin conditions (e.g., pH or temperature changes), can release CBD in response to specific skin needs, providing targeted care.

3. How can CBD be used as an add-on or retail opportunity for spa pros?
-Todd: We find that CBD-infused serums and moisturizers packed with powerful ingredients like retinol, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and apple stem cells, offer a comprehensive approach to skin health. These dynamic duos work together to soothe, hydrate and rejuvenate the skin.
Here's how you can incorporate CBD into your spa services:
- Post-Treatment Pampering: Apply a CBD-infused serum or moisturizer to calm and soothe the skin after facials or other treatments.
- Retail Opportunities: Offer CBD-infused products for sale in your spa's retail area. This allows your clients to continue their skin care routine at home.
By adding CBD to your spa menu, you can elevate your offerings and provide your clients with a truly transformative experience.
-Sutton: CBD masks are amazing for add-on treatments to help calm skin after microneedling or peels during a service. And, if you have a CBD mask, you can sell at retail to help minimize the redness and downtime after those types of treatments.
-Mirsini: CBD-Infused facial serums and masks. By adding a CBD serum or mask to a facial can provide anti-inflammatory benefits, helping to soothe and calm the skin while reducing redness. It’s especially appealing to clients with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Targeted eye treatments, as CBD eye gels or patches reduce puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines, adding a luxurious enhancement to any facial treatment and appealing to clients who want refreshed, youthful-looking eyes.
